Dameion

I grew up in the Iron Triangle in Richmond during the crack epidemic of the 1980s. My mother focused on making sure I knew how to survive. Anytime survival is the number one priority, it’s very hard to let yourself be nurtured.

Living in the projects, I was overexposed and undereducated. I spent my most formative years — from age 16 to 24 — incarcerated. I graduated high school and had my first college experience in there. When I was released, I had the right intentions, but my skills were undeveloped.

AT TIPPING POINT, OUR BOARD COVERS ALL OPERATING AND FUNDRAISING COSTS SO THAT EVERY CENT OF EVERY DOLLAR DONATED FIGHTS POVERTY.

No Limitations.

ONLY 21% OF GRANTS MADE NATIONALLY ARE UNRESTRICTED. TIPPING POINT GIVES FLEXIBLE FUNDS AND TRUSTS GRANTEES TO PUT THE DOLLARS WHERE THEY ARE NEEDED MOST.

We do the homework for you.

With 93 hours of analysis before we make a grant, Tipping Point has vetted hundreds of organizations for strong leadership, clean financials and measurable results over the past 10 years.

MORE THAN JUST A CHECK.

Our partnerships with best-in-class providers have yielded millions worth of services and expertise for grantees, at no cost to you.

CASE STUDY: RUBICON PROGRAMS

RUBICON PROGRAMS

Nearly 300,000 people live in poverty in the East Bay. Since 2005, Tipping Point has invested in Rubicon Programs, an organization that equips low-income people in the region to break the cycle of poverty. Rubicon produces the most annual job placements of all Tipping Point grantees.

Rubicon has long served two distinct populations: individuals with severe and persistent mental illness, and those facing barriers to employment like homelessness and criminal records. Over the past year, first with Tipping Point partner Deloitte and then with Tipping Point staff, Rubicon underwent an intensive strategic planning process to integrate its services.

In May, Executive Director Jane Fischberg announced Rubicon’s decision to divest of services to those with mental illness and focus on those seeking economic empowerment. Due in large part to increased unrestricted funding from Tipping Point, Rubicon was able to let go of $3.3M in government contracts tied to mental illness. Tipping Point also invested in developing Rubicon’s board, leadership team and frontline staff.

Under its streamlined vision, Rubicon will hold itself accountable to longer-term outcomes, working with participants over three years to earn above the self-sufficiency line, save money, build social connections, and utilize health care. “Without Tipping Point’s support, we would have bone scraping against bone,” said Fischberg. “We would be in scarcity mode, unable to think about a better way. Instead, we can concentrate our efforts to realize our greatest potential as an agency.”

EVERY GREAT IDEA STARTED SOMEWHERE.

While the for-profit world spends billions to build products and technologies, far less is invested in addressing social problems. Tipping Point develops new poverty-fighting solutions both in-house and through targeted R+D grants.

eric’s story
I didn’t like Miss Kayla when I first met her because I kept getting in trouble. She gave us a lot of hard vocabulary to learn like voltage, current, and average. We couldn’t have done our experiment without this information.

The science fair was hard because we were up against other smart people. When the judges came, I felt nervous but confident. They asked me questions and I knew the answers. I was really happy when we won. I had never won something before, and I worked really hard.

Now I know that when I grow up I can accomplish more things like going to college, working at Google, and being a famous artist and scientist.

Employment
dameion's story
When I got out of prison, my cousin told me about Rubicon. I signed up for the two-week employment program and began to step outside my comfort zone.

Back then, Rubicon owned a bakery, so that’s where I got my first job. My team was all formerly incarcerated guys, working shifts from 9pm to 5am. I thrived on the responsibility and worked my way up to a leadership role at the organization.

Last year I ran for Richmond City Council. I didn’t win but I intend to in 2016. I sit on the Juvenile Justice Commission, the Delinquency Prevention Commission and the Housing Authority Board. It’s all about having a voice, building a platform, and giving others a sense of ownership in our community.

family wellness
The Ortega Family’s Story
Three months in to my pregnancy, Nurse Ivania started visiting our home every other week. She taught us what I should eat and said that if I felt sick, we could call her anytime.

My labor took more than two days, but Ivania supported us all the way through it. I was shaking and Manuel was crying. The moment Amariz Sofia was born, we were so relieved.

Ivania visited until Amariz Sofia turned two. She taught us how to read the baby’s face and how each stage of development should look. There were fights outside our apartment at O’Farrell and Leavenworth, so she helped us apply for safer housing. She encouraged me to get a job teaching wellness classes to other mothers at the Homeless Prenatal Program.

Ivania didn’t focus just on the baby, but all of us. Because of her, we are in a beautiful place as a family.

jamee’s Story
My mom was murdered when I was seven. After she passed, I moved around with relatives in Oakland, Newark, Napa, American Canyon and Vallejo. I went to at least 12 elementary schools and started living in shelters as a teenager.

I had no structure before I came to Compass. I knew what I wanted, but I didn’t know how to get there. They helped me with my attitude and helped me be patient to take it a step at a time.

As a mother, I want my daughter to have stability. Even though we have our own studio in the financial district now, Danielle still goes to daycare at Compass. She loves it and they love her.

2006 2015
Tipping Point has always been a different kind of funder. Today, 10 years in, our goal is to accelerate organizations at every stage of their development. Whether investing at the ground floor of new ideas or in groups that have served our community for over a century, we are resolved to go even deeper in our efforts.

This work takes time. In place of fleeting metrics like nights of shelter provided or job interviews conducted, we will focus on indicators of lasting change. Degrees attained, homes kept, careers built.

We know that as our grantees become the best versions of themselves, they will support their clients—the 1.3 million individuals and families living in poverty across the Bay Area—to do the same.

THANK you

IN YEAR ONE, WE HAD 92 SUPPORTERS. THIS PAST YEAR, 1,447 OF YOU JOINED US TO FIGHT POVERTY IN OUR COMMUNITY. WE SIMPLY COULDN’T DO THIS WORK WITHOUT YOU.

Eric’s Story

Eric’s
Story

  • I didn’t like Miss Kayla when I first met
  • her because I kept getting in trouble.
  • She gave us a lot of hard vocabulary
  • to learn like voltage, current, and
  • average. We couldn’t have done
  • our experiment without this
  • information.
  • The science fair was hard
  • because we were up against
  • other smart people. When
  • the judges came, I felt
  • nervous but confident. They
  • asked me questions and I
  • knew the answers. I was
  • really happy when we won. I
  • had never won something
  • before, and I worked really
  • hard.
  • Now I know that when I grow up
  • I can accomplish more things like
  • going to college, working at
  • Google, and being a famous artist
  • and scientist.

The Ortega

Story

  • Three months in to my pregnancy, Nurse Ivania
  • started visiting our home every other week. She
  • taught us what I should eat and said that if I
  • felt sick, we could call her anytime.
  • My labor took more than two days, but
  • Ivania supported us all the way

  • was crying. The moment Amariz
  • Sofia was born, we were so
  • relieved.
  • Ivania visited until Amariz Sofia
  • turned two. She taught us how
  • to read the baby’s face and how
  • each stage of development
  • should look. There were fights

  • O’Farrell and Leavenworth, so
  • she helped us apply for safer

Rubicon
programs

CLOSE

Tipping Point develops new poverty-fighting solutions both in-house and through targeted R+D grants.

rd-tlab
This year’s Problem-Solvers built upon the insights from year one in the areas of child care, pre-k education and reentry services.
rd-tlab
In our first round of R+D funding, we took three big bets to amplify the impact of select Tipping Point grantees.

T Lab

rd-tlab

Child Care

The cost of child care – estimated to be higher than college tuition – places it out of reach for most low-income families.

In T Lab’s first year, we found the greatest need among parents working odd hours on nights and weekends. This year, we identified grandmothers as an invisible yet trusted source of care. We trained them as providers and engaged 65 families to explore the feasibility of a cooperative model we called Gma Village.

rd-tlab

Pre-K Education

In some Bay Area communities, as many as 77% of children do not attend preschool.

Last year, we piloted the Little Scholars Bus, a mobile pre-k option for high-need districts. In partnership with Room to Bloom in East Oakland, this year’s team developed a mindfulness curriculum called The Parent Well to combat toxic stress that disrupts the learning process.

rd-tlab

Community Reentry

Studies estimate that 60% of offenders in California will return to prison within three years of release.

In the wake of statewide shifts to give counties authority over supervision and reentry services, T Lab focused this year’s efforts in Contra Costa. By collaborating with Reentry Solutions Group, we developed a service blueprint prototype for recently released individuals in the city of Richmond.

CLOSE

Grants

rd-tlab

Aspire Public Schools

$250,000

T Lab proved that the Little Scholars Bus solves a dire facilities problem and is a safe, accessible option for families whose children would otherwise not attend preschool. This grant supports a four-month pilot to test the feasibility of launching this model at Aspire’s eight Bay Area elementary schools and ultimately across all California campuses.

rd-tlab

Teach for America

$285,000

With a network of 1,000 Bay Area educators and plans to double in reach locally over the next year, Teach for America needs an online platform for collaboration and resource sharing among teachers. In conjunction with support from software development company Neo, this funding will allow the organization to customize a flexible, mobile-first solution that may eventually rollout to its national Corps.

rd-tlab

Year Up

$250,000

Year Up aims to prepare 10,000 young people to enter the workforce across the country annually by 2021. In order to achieve this scale, the organization must master its use of high-touch human interaction and technology-based tools. In partnership with Google, lynda.com and frog, Year Up will build the platform and modules needed to standardize, improve and share its work.

A NEW AGE OF ENGAGEMENT.

Growing Impact
Through Depth,
Not Breadth

  • Tipping Point has always been a different kind
  • of funder. Today, 10 years in, our goal is to
  • accelerate organizations at every stage of
  • their development. Whether investing at
  • the ground floor of new ideas or in
  • groups that have served our community
  • for over a century, we are resolved to
  • go even deeper in our efforts.
  • This work takes time. In place of
  • fleeting metrics like nights of shelter
  • provided or job interviews conducted,
  • we will focus on indicators of lasting
  • change. Degrees attained, homes kept,
  • careers built.
  • We know that as our grantees become the
  • best versions of themselves, they will support
  • their clients—the 1.3 million individuals and
  • families living in poverty across the Bay Area—to
  • do the same.

THANK
YOU

In year one, we had 92 supporters. This past year, 1,447 of you joined us to fight poverty in our community. We simply couldn’t do this work without you.
