Emergency COVID-19 Grants to 26 Bay Area Non-Profits

Tipping Point Announces a New Round of COVID-19 Emergency Grants

Today, Tipping Point Community announced a new round of emergency grants to 26 organizations throughout the Bay Area. The surge in COVID-19 and the new regional, shelter-in-place order, have intensified the urgency for basic needs in low-income communities. Tipping Point’s response efforts focusing on food, rental assistance, and other essentials is rooted in direct requests from organizations fighting on the frontlines of this crisis.

Tipping Point’s grants went to long-standing grantees and neighborhood-based
organizations that are well-positioned to reach those most in need. “We are still dealing with a crisis that requires an immediate response,” said Sam Cobbs, Tipping Point CEO. “We must ensure that 2020 does not set low-income families back for a generation.”

The latest round of grants, distributed today, represents the largest number of grantees receiving funds at one-time in Tipping Point’s history. “This round of grants prioritizes organizations that can put the funds to use quickly, including food distribution programs, community educational hubs, and childcare centers,” said Kelly Bathgate, Tipping Point’s Chief Program Officer.

The pandemic has exacerbated economic and racial inequality, which are especially pronounced as it relates to educating the region’s youth. To combat the increasing inequalities due to distance learning, several of Tipping Point’s grants will go to nonprofits such as the Boys + Girls Club in the Tenderloin and United Playaz, who are working with the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth, and Families and SFUSD to provide neighborhood-based learning hubs. The hubs aim to emulate “pods” that many higher-income and private school families are able to use to support learning during this time.

This latest round of grants is in addition to Tipping Point’s ongoing work to prevent evictions, provide direct cash assistance, and support other efforts to combat COVID impacts on low-income communities throughout the region.
