To combat the sizable racial leadership gap in the nonprofit sector, Tipping Point is committed to investing in equitable organizational practices and leadership offerings that support emerging leaders of color across our grantee network.
Our Strategy
We take a holistic approach that includes:
- Investing in improved Talent and Diversity, Equity, + Inclusion practices across our grantee network
- Funding leadership development opportunities for grantee staff of color across multiple stages of their career paths
Examples of current investments include:
- Contracting with expert consultants to guide grantee organizations through the development and implementation of impactful DEI assessments.
- Organizing peer learning cohorts, on topics such as equitable data analysis or succession planning, for key grantee staff members who have the ability to influence decision making and practices at an organizational level.
- Implementing a portfolio-wide compensation and equity study and providing coaching and consulting for grantees to develop more equitable talent and compensation practices.
- Funding for grantee staff of color to participate in leadership development programs, including INP’s Core Certificate Program, VLC’s Venture Leadership Academy, and Surge Institute’s Oakland Fellowship.
Emerging Leaders Fellowship 2018-2021
For three years, Tipping Point ran a nine-month fellowship for mid-level managers of color at grantee organizations. The Emerging Leaders Fellowship was designed to support these leaders in their individual leadership and career development, with the long-term goals of having more people of color represented in senior leadership roles and developing a network of equity-centered leaders.
Previous Program Evaluation Results
Graduates of the Emerging Leaders Fellowship made progress on:
Wage Gains | Promotions | Expanded Influence
Increased Career Opportunities | Increased Representation in Organizational Leadership
Learnings that Informed New Offerings:
The level of engagement of fellows’ supervisors varied greatly from organization to organization and influenced outcomes.
Helping organizations deepen their understanding and practice of DEI work can create a larger and more lasting impact than working with individuals
Based on these learnings and Tipping Point’s aim to expand leadership development offerings to more staff throughout our grantee organizations, the Fellowship was discontinued in October 2021 and replaced by the new Emerging Leaders strategy detailed above.
