Tipping Point Challenges the Doom-Loop Narrative with an Evening Focused on the “Good News” Happening Throughout the Region
SAN FRANCISCO (May 3, 2024) – Today, Tipping Point Community announced it raised more than $14.5 million at its annual fundraising Benefit, held last night in the Mission District. Since its founding in 2005, Tipping Point has become the leading organization in the Bay Area investing in poverty-fighting nonprofits and solutions across the region. At its largest gathering in over five years, Tipping Point hosted nearly 1,000 donors, business leaders, and nonprofit visionaries to support the work of its grantees. Tipping Point’s Board of Directors funds 100% of the organization’s operating expenses, including event costs, so every dollar given by a donor from the night goes directly to the community in the next year. This year’s Benefit—the biggest in the region focused on poverty—celebrated the wins and untold stories happening in the Bay Area every single day. It showcased the power of coming together for change.
“Today in the Bay Area, 1 in 4 families can’t make ends meet. We have a lot of work to do. But, there’s a headline that flew under the radar this year,” said Sam Cobbs, CEO of Tipping Point. “Poverty in the Bay Area is declining. It may not always feel that way, but over the last 10 years, the rate of people in poverty has consistently trended in the right direction. The work this community does matters—and it’s making a difference.”
The evening included powerful speeches from Tipping Point’s community of leaders, grantee organizations, and the Bay Area residents they serve. Mental Health Association (MHA) of San Mateo County was the featured grantee of the night. MHA enriches quality of life, restores dignity, and reduces homelessness for those affected by mental illness and HIV/AIDS. The event also showcased a film capturing the work of David Trujillo, who at one point experienced homelessness and today works as a peer counselor at MHA. David’s position is funded by Tipping Point.
Terriana Briggs, a leader at MHA, delivered a moving speech about her career journey to supporting our community, the impact of MHA, and the importance of individuals like David sharing his story and staying involved to work towards solutions.
The night culminated with a concert by Grammy-Award winning artists, TLC and Nelly.
The event was co-chaired by Carolyn and Andrew Chatham, Shashi and Dipanjan “DJ” Deb, Alana and David Trujillo, and Abby Turin and Jon Gans. It took place at Skylight at The Armory in the heart of the Mission neighborhood in San Francisco.
