COVID19 EMERGENCY RESPONSE
Tipping Point is providing our Bay Area grantees with ongoing support and the resources needed to respond to new challenges in the fight against poverty, as the effects of the COVID-19 crisis will last long after shelter-in-place orders end. Learn more about our grantmaking, here.
THE NEED
In the months leading up to the COVID-19 crisis, Tipping Point conducted a comprehensive study of poverty in the Bay Area. The study serves as a critical baseline for our region’s pre-existing economic challenges. For instance, 1 in 2 households could not pay all of their bills over the course of a year. We know the pandemic will make this inequality gap more extreme, as shown in numbers only weeks after COVID hit:
An estimated 2.3 MILLION renters in California will be at risk of losing housing as a result of economic impacts caused by COVID-19.
Black people, who account for 12% of California’s COVID-19 fatalities so far, comprise only 6.5% of the state’s population.
14,000 businesses had been adversely impacted by San Francisco’s stay-at-home order.
OUR IMMEDIATE RESPONSE
On March 13, three days before shelter-in-place began in the Bay Area, Tipping Point launched our COVID-19 Emergency Response. Leveraging the expert knowledge of our ~60 grantee leaders, we made timely and strategic investments to our grantees as well as new organizations to provide essential assistance to the low-income people disproportionately affected by the pandemic, and the non-profits they rely upon.
