Client-Turned-CEO Transforms Nonprofit and the Communities It Serves

PUBLISHED: Jul 11, 2025

Omar Carrera, former client and now CEO of Canal Alliance, shares his journey of transformation at the 2025 Tipping Point Benefit. Canal Alliance is a pillar of support for Latinx immigrants and their families in Marin County, providing career and education programs, legal support, and social services that help individuals and families overcome barriers to their success.

With Tipping Point’s capacity building support and Omar’s leadership, Canal Alliance has grown their budget from $3 million to $15 million, with strong financial reserves and a comprehensive package of services that are supporting over 4,800 of our neighbors each year.

Omar’s story at Canal Alliance was shared at the Tipping Point Benefit, where the Bay Area community raised a record-breaking $20 million to fund our grantmaking for the next year.

Canal Alliance is one of the over 50 nonprofits that receive unrestricted funding from Tipping Point Community. Tipping Point finds, funds, and strengthens the most promising poverty-fighting solutions so one day everyone in the Bay Area can prosper. Since 2005, we have invested over $440 million in community interventions, policy change, and new ideas.

In 2024 alone, our grantees provided life-changing services in housing, early childhood, education, and employment to over 91,000 of our neighbors across the Bay Area.
