Board Unanimously Appoints Current President, Sam Cobbs, as CEO; Founder Daniel Lurie to serve as Board Chair

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 15, 2019 – Tipping Point Community, a non-profit that fights poverty in the Bay Area, announced today that it is appointing its President, Sam Cobbs, as its next CEO. Founder and current CEO, Daniel Lurie, will be stepping down after 15 years and Cobbs will be assuming the role effective January 6, 2020. Lurie will serve as Chair of the Board.

“Starting and leading Tipping Point has been the greatest honor of my life,” said Lurie. “A tremendous point of pride is that Tipping Point has grown to become an organization that can attract a leader as accomplished as Sam. With Sam at the helm matched by our community’s unwavering support, I can’t imagine a better next chapter for Tipping Point and the people who depend on us most.”

Cobbs joined Tipping Point in 2018 as Chief Program Officer and was quickly promoted to his current role as President. Prior to Tipping Point, he served as CEO of First Place for Youth, a Tipping Point grantee, for over a decade. Under his leadership, First Place grew from an Oakland-based grassroots organization into one of the largest providers of housing and services for former foster youth in the country. His work has led him to testify before Congress, be named an Annie E. Casey Foundation Fellow, and be granted the James Irvine Leadership Award.

“As the President of Tipping Point and as a grantee, I have seen first-hand the power of this community,” said Cobbs. “It is an honor to take the baton from Daniel who has grown Tipping Point from an idea on paper into an invaluable force for change in the Bay Area. I look forward to building upon Tipping Point’s track record of tirelessly fighting to break the cycle of poverty for people in our region.”
